SUPER CNY WEEKEND: PART III (BUKIT BROWN CEMETERY)
On Sunday Agas, Shanty, Pari and I decided that there was a certain level of excitement missing from our lives, so we should do something about it.
Hence we decided to venture into the unknown depths of The Bukit Brown Cemetery (insert cool lightning effects here)!!! This great idea sprung from the minds of Pauline, one of my LEAP buddies when I told her that I was planning to go to the Chua Chu Kang cemetery. She told me that Chua Chu Kang is like a walk in the park compared to Bukit Brown. And how right she was!!
We all decided to put ourselves in the right frame of mind first by watching Raaz 2 (a horror movie). Unfortunately, the movie had exactly the opposite effect of what we had planned. It was so fucking ridiculously hilarious that Pari aur maine comment maar maar ke poori movie ko nanga kar diya! In fact, if anything…the movie just served the purpose of relaxing us before we went
!
After the movie, we went to Mustafa to buy supplies like flashlights, umbrellas etc. Excellent call on the flashlights, as we would later find out. Had dinner there then headed for Bukit Brown.
The trip had all the initial signs of a flop show…the spent money, rain, getting lost before we even reached. But I guess that somehow, the forces of good (or evil), made us find our way to the first and most creepy trail. Torch lights in hand (3 lights shared between 4), we headed into the super dark and super creepy and narrow trail.
There were graves on both sides of the narrow path and right next to our feet!!
This is just one of the less scarier ones. We went on and on for a long time (around 20-30 minutes) until we came across a house like structure with bikes parked in front. As soon as we neared that, we heard eerie howling sounds. My first instinct was to thin that there were people inside just trying to scare us. But when we flashed our torches….
…we saw…
Dogs!
Angry and ferocious!
Above us.
And one on the road.
Right in front.
Snarling.
Agastya made an immediate U-Turn followed by Pari. Thank God for our presence of mind that we didn’t run. Shanty and I flashed our lights at the dog and slowly back stepped. In fact while going back, Pari and Agas were looking in the front (with Agas comically stiff and not turning back even once…lol), while Shanty and I guarded our backs with the flashlights constantly focused at the dog. The dogs kept on howling and barking into the night for a long time, even after we lost sight of them.
That incident really got our blood pumping and scared us considerably. We decided to follow one of the roads which lead us beneath a bridge. Here we relaxed and caught our breaths for about half an hour.
After that, we ventured into the main larger cemetery!!! Now that cemetery was unlike any other cemetery we had seen before! There were crisscrossing paths, really really old graves, jungle like tree everywhere and no lights whatsoever. Once again, flashlights in hand we ventured into the cemetery and after about 1 hour, we got lost! I heard some weird growling noises as well that scared me to no ends. Pari and Agastya also heard and it freaked them out as well. All this while we were lost inside, trying to find our way out
.
Then after some logical reasoning we found a wider road that lead us out. Just before that we heard some chanting noises which we didn’t find the source of. There was a small shrine over there where Agastya suddenly regained his courage and confidently explored without any flashlight or anything. So basically the chanting worked out for him! There were several dolls and idols over there, which under any other circumstance could’ve easily freaked anybody out…but somehow at that point of time…it just calmed our nerves.
When we finally left the cemetery, we came across a biker gang, who were thoroughly impressed by our daring and actually called us “fucking hardcore sia”. Basically when they saw the cemetery they were too fucking scared to enter even with their bikes and despite the fact that there were 6-7 of them. On the other hand, we bloody went in with nothing but fucking torches in our hands and for a good 2-3 hours. That really made my night!! We told the bikers that we were going to explore more. As soon as we saw them take their bikes and ride off…we immediately flagged a fucking cab, got in and headed for home
!!
I think we reached back at around 5:30 am. And that’s how CNY night 3 went
. Right now there’s no one at home so I’d rather not blog about CNY night 4, which is easily an experience that has scared me the most in my entire life.

Any other interesting sights and sounds?
Apart from the eerie sounds we heard in the cemetery and the dog encounter, we saw other chutiyap:
-
Abandoned bungalows near the cemetery (I mean who would be dumb enough to buy those)!!!
-
A very creepy broken synthesizer that was dumped at the side of the road near the cemetery.
-
Creepy looking kermit the frog doll in the middle of nowhere, that Shanty promptly desecrated.
Here is Agastya’s account of the night:
